This area of our website has been created to provide you with information to assist you in making your decision when you consider applying to work with us. All staff working at DESS play an important and active role in the continuous development of the School and are encouraged to do so.
DESS is the premier English National Curriculum Primary School in Dubai catering for over 900 children, a large majority of whom are British. It remains the oldest British school in Dubai and, together with sister school, DESC (based in Academic City), has been educating children for over half a century. The school has small classes and is extremely well resourced.
Our Oud Metha location includes outstanding resources and facilities for all curriculum areas and has most recently been extended with the addition of a Foundation Stage block to offer education at FS1 and FS2. Each year group has five classes with average class size between 23 and 25. Each phase group (FS/KS1/Lower KS2/Upper KS2) has a phase leader who is one of the team of ten class teachers. At Key Stage One each class, and at Key Stage Two each year group, has a learning assistant. The school also has specialist staff in areas including games, literacy, music and ICT who both teach and support the work of the class teacher.
The Learning Support Department supports both individual children and class groups. The school has a full time nurse. Specialist rooms and facilities support this work including: library with computers for research purposes, an ICT suite (containing 26 computers), various research areas, an iPad trolley containing 30 iPads and each year group has its own laptop trolley (each containing 20 laptops), science, art, technology, music, French and Arabic rooms, 25 metre swimming pool, gym, school hall and sports field. DESS is broadly selective catering mainly to children of average and above average ability and does not accept children with serious SENs. To be accepted into the school a child must be competent in both spoken and written English appropriate for their age.
