DESS PE department has 3 full-time PE teachers, 2 full time swimming teachers and 1 part-time dance teacher. As a department we set goals for children to develop lifetime habits in keeping fit and healthy. The department is focused on improving every child’s potential in physical activity. We approach every child’s needs individually and ensure that these are met. In addition, we also strive to ensure that there is a large element of fun within lessons. All areas of PE are covered including swimming, games, athletics, gymnastics, striking & fielding and dance.
A comprehensive programme of after school activities are offered each afternoon for the children to participate in. Fixtures and competitions happen in a wide range of sports throughout the year so the children can apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in a competitive situation.

Dance is offered throughout Key Stage One at Dubai English Speaking School.  Topics are chosen from those being studied in the classroom as appropriate to supplement learning as many of these lend themselves well to movement.  A variety of stimuli are used including music, poetry, images and props.  All school productions (including those in Key Stage Two) include choreographed dances and dance has an integral part in the development of  Creative Arts in the school.

At DESS competitive sport has a very high profile. Over recent years the results in all major games and tournaments have improved considerably. These could now be classed as outstanding. This has been achieved through great determination, hard-work and commitment to training. Significant parental support also contributes to the children’s achievements. DESS have won 6 tournament trophies at the BSME Games as well as being overall winners. They continue to win Netball, Rugby and Football leagues in different age groups throughout Dubai. Swimming times are improving yearly, school records are regularly broken and we have become one of the leading schools in Dubai swimming.

Philosophy regards to team selection

At DESS, as well as focusing on physical performance, and team play, we also place a great emphasis on fair play and good sportsmanship. The children are made aware that by competing in a DESS team, they are representing the school. The way that they approach competition reflects not only their own values but that of the school. In order for them to develop a well balanced and responsible attitude towards competition, we have developed the DESS sporting creed. This covers all aspects of participating in competition; attitude to training, handling victory and defeat, interacting with officials, parents and other players.

When applying to DESS, please inform the school of any significant sporting achievements or abilities your child may have. DESS always welcomes those who can enjoy and contribute to the school’s sporting successes.

What makes a good sport?

Always give 100% effort regardless of how large or small your contribution to the team
Always encourage and support your team even when not competing yourself.
Always be on time to meetings, practices and fixtures
Always support and help your team mates
Always attend practices
Always have the correct kit and equipment
Always be respectful of officials, coaches and spectators
Always strive to improve
Always learn from mistakes
Always accept victory respectfully and in an appropriate way
Always accept defeat with continued determination
Always approach your competition with a positive mental attitude (PMA)
Always believe in yourself
Always recognise and applaud good performance in others
